Understanding Sleep
Importance of Good Sleep
Early research discovered that Sleep was a much more complex process than previously recognized, and that there was a clear physiological difference between the waking and sleeping state.
Sleep has been defined as a condition of body and mind in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes are closed, the postural muscles are relaxed, and consciousness is suspended. Different stages during the sleep period have been observed, along with variations in physiological processes.
These are the Sleep Stages:
- Non-REM (NREM) Sleep -Stage 1,2,3
- Rapid eye Movement (REM) Sleep
In healthy sleep dynamics, the approximate 90 min Sleep cycle ( NREM stages 1-3 and REM) repeats 4-6 times per night. Lighter stages of Sleep are Stages 1, and 2 progressing into deeper sleep stage 3 (NREM) and to REM period sleep with muscle atonia. A regular, uninterrupted sleep period appears essential to optimal daytime functioning.
Sleep plays an important role in healthy living. Sound sleep helps you restore energy, repair and heal blood vessels and keeps you in good mood. When you fail to get sufficient sleep, both your physical and mental health can be disturbed. Sleep disorders are among the most serious public health issues in the United States. Sleep apnea is the most prevalent among the different types of sleep problems in the population. It is a disorder which not only disrupts your sleep cycle but also worsens your overall health.
